Owing to his wife and children heading off to the beach for a week or two tomorrow morning, a certain someone - let's call him Mr. LL - will be indulging himself in a little retro-bachelorhood. (Nothing scurrilous, of course.)
One of the things Mr. LL intends to do is sit down with his glass of Laphroaig and his cigar and revisit the Conan canon of movies, viewing both of the originals plus The Rock's Scorpion King, which Mr. LL believes to be a worthy successor to Ahnold's previous works. Mr. LL is also going to decide whether Kevin Sorbo's Kull the Conqueror has any place in this list, although he already strongly doubts it. (On the other hand, the Sorbo movie also features Tia Carrere, so who really cares, right?)
Are there any other movies of this sort that Mr. LL ought to include in his viewing list? And don't say Red Sonja, because that was an utter dud, demonstrating nicely the difference between a Truly Bad Film and just plain wasted celluloid.

Stop at Conan the Barbarian. (In case of an emergency, the Scorpion King is an acceptable denouement.) Everything else pales in comparrison and will undoubtedly leave Mr. LL dissapointed and perhaps a little empty inside.
Instead, I suggest immediately signing up at the forums for Age of Conan: Hyborean Adventures, the upcoming MMORPG set in Robert E. Howard's rich, dark world of the hyborean age. FunCom is a development & production company unparalelled in creating truly immersive gaming experiences, and the features coming in AoC will more than likely raise the bar for this entire genre of games.
The game is scheduled for release in the 4th quarter this year, and we're hoping for an announcement of closed beta-testing to begin soon.
After playing MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) for over 7 years now, Age of Conan is the first release I've looked forward to so much since Star Wars: Galaxies (even though that turned out to be a heart-breaking dissapointment).
The world that Howard created was a dark and gritty place and we certainly aim to very true to that feeling and atmosphere.Obviously Howard wrote the original works in the 1930’s, a long time before world war two, Martin Luther King or the 60’s sexual revolution, and some of his themes and characters are very much creations of their time that do occasionally jar our modern sensibilities, so Age of Conan will not be done in a tasteless, exploitative manner. Rest assured however that the world of Conan will never, ever, be politically correct and we hope that the game will capture all the elements of Howard’s creation that make it what it is!
If there is one development company that can pull this off, FunCom is it. Come over to the dark side, log in and leave reality behind.
